Software spending set to increase worldwide

The worldwide software market is expected to experience 4.3% growth in 2013.

Big Data and analytics, as well as Enterprise applications, are expected to boost spending on software at a compound annual growth rate of about 6% during 2012-2017, according to a report from International Data Corporation (IDC).

The worldwide software market is expected to experience 4.3% growth in 2013, a decrease from the earlier estimated 5.7% year-over-year growth in May, the report revealed.

The report revealed that the Collaborative Applications with Structured Data Management Software and Data Access, Analysis and Delivery applications are expected to grow at 8% during for the forecast period.

IDC Worldwide Software, Services, and Executive Advisory Research senior vice president Henry Morris said leveraging the social dimensions of the Internet keeps fueling the collaboration growth, much of which is in the form of software as a service.

"This is complementary to the increased attention to Big Data & Analytics solutions, which help enterprises to understand and act on anticipated customer behavior and provide new insights into product reliability and maintenance," Morris added.

Enterprise Applications including CRM, ERM, SCM, and Operations as well as Manufacturing Applications are expected to record 6% CAGR.

IDC enterprise applications and digital commerce research director Christine Dover said enterprises are starting to implement applications that either didn't exist or weren't needed in the past, such as commerce applications in all industries, not just retail, but also manufacturing, hospitality, food and beverage, and even the public sector.

"IDC is also seeing applications in categories that didn't exist in the past for requirements that may have been met using custom applications or manual processes," Dover said.

During the period between 2012 and 2017, Asia/Pacific region with developing regions like Latin America, and Central Eastern, Middle East, and Africa (CEMA) would increase by 8.2% CAGR, while the mature regions North America, Western Europe, and Japan are expected to experience 5.4% rise.

Do you have a need for speed? Say hello to the worlds fastest computer.

SX-ACE has the fastest processor core offering 256 GFLOPS speed.

NEC has launched its SX-ACE supercomputer which is claimed to offer fastest processor core performance in the world.

The new supercomputer is claimed to incorporate the fastest processor core offering 256 GFLOPS speed, which is ten times more compared to the current SX-9 models.

The device also has a multi-core vector CPU that provides an ultra high-speed interconnect with a maximum of 8 GB/s in each direction offering highest memory bandwidth per core of 64 GFLOPS.

According to the company, the SX-ACE can have a rack computing performance of 16 TFLOPS (one trillion floating-point operations per second) and a memory bandwidth of 16TB per second.

SX-ACE is said to be equipped with the new LSI technology, high-density design and high-efficiency cooling technology that help in reducing power consumption to one-tenth, while occupying one-fifth of the floor space compared to the SX-9 models.

The vector supercomputers are designed to process large-scale data and to scientific computations.

Smartglasses 'would boost workplace efficiency'

The use of smartglasses like Google Glass would boost worker efficiency in several verticals including manufacturing, field service, retail and healthcare, a new Gartner report noted.
The analyst firm predicts that smartglass adoption in the US would rise to 10% by 2018 in firms with offsite workers, including field service personnel and inspectors.
Gartner research director Angela McIntyre said that smartglasses with augmented reality (AR) and head-mounted cameras can boost the efficiency of technicians, engineers and other workers in field service, maintenance, healthcare and manufacturing roles.

"In the next three to five years, the industry that is likely to experience the greatest benefit from smartglasses is field service, potentially increasing profits by $1bn annually," McIntyre said.
"The greatest savings in field service will come from diagnosing and fixing problems more quickly and without needing to bring additional experts to remote sites."

The launch of economical, consumer versions of smartglasses would also assist in further adoption because half of the firms that would benefit from these gadgets will offer them to some of their employees who could utilise them, the analyst added.

Adoption of smartglasses would be rather slow as the benefits they offer will be dependent on the apps and services aimed at smartglasses, the report also suggested.

The new gadgets are anticipated to have the most impact on heavy industry, including manufacturing and oil and gas, with medium impact on mixed industries, such as retail, consumer-packaged goods and healthcare.
Gartner also anticipates some of the essential functions of smartglasses would assist in boosting efficiency in the enterprise.

Gartner principal research analyst Tuong Nguyen said that given these advances, the goals of corporate training may evolve away from memorising procedural steps to knowing how to use smartglasses and access key information using voice commands.

"Classroom training and tests on the content of manuals can be reduced since much of the practical training can be done 'on the job' with the assistance of smartglasses," Nguyen said.
"However, training must always include safety and employees should continue to know how to use equipment for routine tasks."

Benefits of using smartglasses in the healthcare industry include facilitating telemedicine and authority consultations with doctors in a different location, and also serving as a how-to guide for carrying out medical procedures, as well as streamlining patient experience at the doctor's office.

"IT organisations are already being asked to make recommendations about whether smartglasses should be used in the workplace based on benefits and risks perspective, as well as policy and implementation," McIntyre said.
"Now is the time for IT organisations to refresh their bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies with smartglasses in mind.

"Though IT organisations will provide smartglasses to employees who regularly wear them for their job task, much of the IT impact may come from employees wearing their personal smartglasses at work."
