Software spending set to increase worldwide

The worldwide software market is expected to experience 4.3% growth in 2013.

Big Data and analytics, as well as Enterprise applications, are expected to boost spending on software at a compound annual growth rate of about 6% during 2012-2017, according to a report from International Data Corporation (IDC).

The worldwide software market is expected to experience 4.3% growth in 2013, a decrease from the earlier estimated 5.7% year-over-year growth in May, the report revealed.

The report revealed that the Collaborative Applications with Structured Data Management Software and Data Access, Analysis and Delivery applications are expected to grow at 8% during for the forecast period.

IDC Worldwide Software, Services, and Executive Advisory Research senior vice president Henry Morris said leveraging the social dimensions of the Internet keeps fueling the collaboration growth, much of which is in the form of software as a service.

"This is complementary to the increased attention to Big Data & Analytics solutions, which help enterprises to understand and act on anticipated customer behavior and provide new insights into product reliability and maintenance," Morris added.

Enterprise Applications including CRM, ERM, SCM, and Operations as well as Manufacturing Applications are expected to record 6% CAGR.

IDC enterprise applications and digital commerce research director Christine Dover said enterprises are starting to implement applications that either didn't exist or weren't needed in the past, such as commerce applications in all industries, not just retail, but also manufacturing, hospitality, food and beverage, and even the public sector.

"IDC is also seeing applications in categories that didn't exist in the past for requirements that may have been met using custom applications or manual processes," Dover said.

During the period between 2012 and 2017, Asia/Pacific region with developing regions like Latin America, and Central Eastern, Middle East, and Africa (CEMA) would increase by 8.2% CAGR, while the mature regions North America, Western Europe, and Japan are expected to experience 5.4% rise.

UK capital set to get .london web domain name next year

The sites with the new domain will go live in summer 2014.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved the UK capital to use .london web domain name, making it one of the first cities globally to have its own domain name.
As per the approval, businesses, individuals and organisations in the British capital would be allowed to apply for web addresses with .london suffix from spring 2014.

Claimed to boost online presences and promote the British capital, the new domain name is set to be adopted by tens of thousands of businesses, including some of London's most esteemed brands including Selfridges and Carnaby Street.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said adopting the .london suffix will enable organisations to more closely associate themselves with the city's powerful global brand.
"This is also an excellent opportunity to expand London's digital presence, which in turn is set to generate funds to invest back into the city," Johnson said.

London & Partners' new subsidiary Dot London Domainsm will be responsible for managing the new domain, while London-based Minds + Machines will offer registry services.
London & Partners chief executive Gordon Innes said that London businesses and organisations are extremely excited about the opportunities .london presents.

"We are already seeing huge interest - not just from London's most prestigious stores and visitor attractions, but also from local businesses and tradespeople," Innes said.

"Applicants will get a domain name that links them with London and is easier to remember and more powerful, potentially resulting in more customers."

Would your business benefit from a .london domain?

ICT Spending to reach $2.14 trillion in 2014

IT spending is expected to increase by 5% during 2014 to reach $2.14 trillion, led by a rebound in China, continued momentum in US and Europe, according to a report from the International Data Corporation (IDC).
According to the report, spending is expected to rise 4% in 2013 to $2.04 trillion, a decrease in percentage points compared to the 5% increase in last year, due to the slowdown in key emerging markets including China and Russia.

The analysts expect that the increase in spending will be attributed to increase in smartphone and tablet shipments, while the IT spending excluding mobile phones is expected to rise by 2.6% in 2013.
IDC Global Technology & Industry Research Organization (GTIRO) vice president Stephen Minton said this has been a tough year for many IT vendors, with infrastructure spending in the first half of 2013 proving weaker than previously expected.

"The overall industry has been propped up by continued strength in mobile devices, especially smartphones, but the slowdown in emerging markets was another headwind for infrastructure-focused tech firms on top of government sequestration in the US and continued sluggish growth in Europe," Minton added.
Servers, storage and enterprise networks expenditure is anticipated to experience 1% growth in 2013, followed by 4% rise next year.

IT spending in US is expected to grow 5% in 2013 and the storage and server markets are expected to improve in 2014, while PC spending would decrease affected by the adoption of tablet.
"The main headwind, aside from uncertainty over the next round of political dogfighting, is cannibalization as tablets continue to eat into PC sales and as the Cloud eats into traditional IT services revenues."
"This cannibalisation trend is seen across all geographies, and will be a constraint on IT spending even while the macroeconomic environment improves."

The report anticipates Western Europe to increase its IT spend and Japan is expected to remain constant for 2013, while China is expected report 8% growth in 2013 and continue it to 2014 with 14% rise riding over the strong sales in PCs, servers and storage segments.
"In recent years, growth in emerging markets has been a 'pot of gold' for many global IT suppliers, as they capitalized on huge opportunities to expand into new territories even while growth in developed economies was anemic."

"This year has been a different story, with some organizations stung by the large bets they placed on a continuation of those growth trends."
"It's important to remember that growth in emerging markets will continue to outpace the US, Europe and Japan, in spite of these bumps in the road, and that any retreat from those geographies will only be to the benefit of emerging competitors from China and elsewhere with global ambitions of their own."
